Eyre Peninsula Coastal Development Strategy

Eyre Peninsula Coastal Development Strategy

We made submissions to this important review of planning and development along the coastal councils of Eyre Peninsula. The Eyre Peninsula Coastal Development Strategy was conducted by the Planning SA and the Eyre Peninsula Local Government Association, under the direction of the then Planning Minister Trish White. Our submissions pointed to the outstanding environmental, scenic and social values of the Chain of Bays, and we argued that local government development plans and development assessment structures and processes failed to provide adequate assessment of the environmental impacts, and especially the cumulative impacts, of coastal development. We pointed out that the boundary of the coastal zone needed to include areas that are subjected to dynamic coastal processes, such as coastal dunes, areas subject to flooding, coastal wetlands and coastal cliff-tops. We argued that this coastal zone should have stricter planning controls and more informed development assessment processes.
