Chain of Bays receives $779,403 funding from Federal Government

The Friends of Sceale Bay Incorporated have successfully applied for funding through Caring for Our Country Business plan projects funded through the open call process 
The project will run for three years (2010 to 2013) and is titled:
Indigenous and Community Partnerships Restoring the Chain of Bays
   
This project will re-vegetate, restore and protect targeted areas within the Chain of Bays. Documentary films will be produced, highlighting Indigenous knowledge and Indigenous and community partnerships in restoring the Chain of Bays.

First project working group meeting will be held tomorrow at Streaky Bay. Information about the meeting and applying for funding for on-ground works will be posted here. Field trips and filming are taking place this week so check this blog for regular updates.

The first project working group meeting last month went really well, and a tour of some of the sites covered by the project was done the next day.

The next meeting will be in April and another tour of sites around Baird Bay will hopefully be possible.

The first round of devolved grants will be announced shortly. The devolved grants will be available for private land owners, groups and councils to undertake conservation work in the Chain of Bays. Details will appear on this website and in the West Coast Sentinel newspaper.

All landowners along the coast of the Chain of Bays will be contacted by letter and invited to apply.

The first round of grants will provide $40,000 funding; the maximum amount of any individual application will be capped at $20,000.

The first stage of revegetation works for the Chain of Bays Caring for our Country Project will begin this month on land purchased by the State Government for conservation purposes. Ideal conditions for plant germination have encouraged the Project Work Team to start revegetation works ahead of schedule. Direct seeding of Stage 1 revegetation works will be undertaken with local seed which has been collected by Aboriginal people over the past 5 months. Stages two and three will increase the species diversity of revegetated areas, using seed from other species which will become available as the seasons progress. It is exciting to be embarking on this phase of the project, which will restore habitat for the benefit of the environment and the community.
